Simple Things You Can Do To Become a Great Manager

Management is one of the most misunderstood aspects of the business world. Some view managers as “bosses” whose job is solely to tell others what to do and when to do it. Others believe managers should be “servant leaders” who work right alongside employees and help build the business up from behind the scenes. When we find ourselves in a management position, it can be difficult to know exactly how to proceed in order to perform effectively and to help our employees succeed. If you are wondering where to start, consider the following to help you along the way.

Show Humility and Empathy

As a manager, you should have your employees’ best interests in mind at all times. After all, your employees are the ones who will execute your vision. It is imperative that you treat each person with respect at all times. You can do this by demonstrating humility and empathy in your words and in your actions. Be willing to admit your own shortcomings and mistakes when necessary. Make time to listen to employees’ ideas, thoughts, and concerns. Take every opportunity to show your employees you stand with them and not above them.

Be Honest

Transparency is key when building and maintaining relationships with your coworkers. As a manager, you are often expected to formulate and present plans, but there will be times where things do not go as expected. Avoid holding information back from your employees, even if that means admitting you do not know what to do or that your plan has failed. Your employees will recognize and appreciate your honesty. This can also provide opportunities for employees to make suggestions or pitch ideas. This fosters collaboration and celebration of individuals’ hard work.

Do Not Take Things Personally

Part of holding a management position is handling the unfortunate- yet inevitable- instances of conflict amongst coworkers. There will be times in which you find yourself at the center of conflict in the workplace. It can be all too easy to take these issues personally, especially if an employee has a problem with one of your decisions or voices a personal grievance against you. Discipline yourself to view these situations with logic and avoid letting your emotions take hold of you. Step back, communicate openly, listen carefully, and focus on solutions.
